Doctor of Sports Management Degrees
My Degree and What it’s Good For
A doctoral degree, or Ph.D in Sports Management, is optimal for someone who wants to do extremely high level research about athletics, or teach about it at a university. Applying to a doctoral program requires that you already have at least a bachelor’s degree, and likely a master’s degree as well. It can take two to three years to finish a Ph.D, and requires you to produce a piece of professional-quality research, called a dissertation, which you must then defend in front of experts in the body of knowledge that you are studying.
My Earning Potential
In general, a higher level of education will net you a higher paycheck, but positions at the top of any field are hard to come by, and getting hired in a lower position when you are clearly overqualified can be tough. The typical career track for someone with a doctorate is to become a professor or go into academic research. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for professors and postsecondary teachers as of May, 2010 was $62,050.
