Every pro sport, over time, contains moments that seem to stop the world in its tracks. Broken records, brutal attacks, and astounding feats despite injuries can take fans’ breaths away. There are so many such moments in pro sports history, but the following twenty-five accomplishments have shaken the world in one form or another. Most of these moments are connected to a person who represented a sport at its best. There may never be another Tiger Woods, Joe Namath, Wayne Gretzsky, or “Magic” Johnson. There may never be moments like the “Immaculate Reception,” or the time Joe Lewis became a national hero because of a 124-second knockout that personified the rivalry between nations. Any sports manager would salivate for those moments, although some moments aren’t that great, and even a movie can change a sport forever…

Football

The Fog Bowl: New Year’s Eve 1988, a dense fog rolled over Chicago’s Soldier Field during the 2nd quarter, cutting visibility to about 10-20 yards for the rest of the game. The fog was so thick that the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles were forced to use their running game because receivers could not see the long passes thrown to them. TV and radio announcers, and the fans in the stadium had trouble seeing what was happening on the field. The Bears won 20-12.

Joe Namath’s Guarantee: Three days before the third World Championship game between AFL team New York Jets and NFL team Baltimore Colts, on January 9, 1969, Namath, quarterback for the Jets, declared that the Jets would win the game. Namath then completed 17 out of 28 passes for 206 yards, and was named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player.

The Immaculate Reception: Voted by NFL Films as the Greatest Play in NFL History, this moment came from a divisional play off game between the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers on December 23, 1972. Facing a 4th and 10 on their own 40 yard line and trailing the Raiders by a score of 7-6 with time running out, quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw to his running back. The pass was deflected and then caught, inches from the ground by rookie fullback Franco Harris, who ran the ball for a touchdown to take the lead with five seconds remaining. The play was called the “Immaculate Reception” by a Pittsburgh fan.

The Heidi Game: On November 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders defeated the New York Jets, 43–32. The game is remembered for its exciting finish, as Oakland scored two touchdowns in the final minute to overcome a 32–29 New York lead. The Heidi Game obtained its name because the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) controversially broke away from the game with the Jets still winning to air the television film Heidi.

Monday Night Football is Born: On September 21, 1970, this American phenomenon began, accompanied by Howard Cosell’s nasal announcing. The Cleveland Browns played host to the New York Jets, with the Browns winning 31-21. This loss followed the Jet’s Super Bowl win in 1969.

Baseball

Babe Ruth Breaks Home Run Record: George Herman Ruth, Jr. hit his 60th home run on September 30, 1927. Ruth was the leader of the famous 1927 Yankees, also known as Murderer’s Row because of the strength of its hitting lineup.

Babe Ruth’s Record Broken: On April 8, 1974, Hank Aaron broke the career home run record set by Babe Ruth. This event was notable because he received death threats and a large volume of hate mail from people who did not want to see a black man break Ruth’s record.

The First Perfect Game: A perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher (or pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and in which no opposing player reaches base. It can be a no-hitter and a shutout. That first perfect game occurred on June 12, 1880, when John Lee Richmond, pitching for the Worcester Ruby Legs, beat the Cleveland Blues 1-0, with the only run scoring on an error.

Boston Red Sox Finally Win: Since their last championship in 1918, the Red Sox were supposedly cursed. But on October 27, 2004, the curse ended when the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals, leaving the world in a state of shock. With the win, pitcher Derek Lowe became the first pitcher to ever win three series clinching games in a single post-season.

The Only World Series No-Hitter: Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in World Series history. He was pitching for the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers on October 8, 1956. But, he had help from Gil McDougald, when the Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson hit a liner that caromed off third baseman Andy Carey right to McDougald, who threw out Robinson by a step.

Basketball

100 Points in a Single Game: On March 2, 1962, a young Wilt Chamberlain set the NBA (National Basketball Association) single-game scoring record by racking up 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a 169-147 win over the New York Knicks in Hershey, PA.

Five Positions: In what would be the final game of the 1980 NBA series, 20-year-old Earvin “Magic” Johnson played all five positions on the court and started the game at center for the injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He finished with 42 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists en route to his first title for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Torn Muscle Plays: During the fifth game of the 1970 NBA Finals, Willis Reed suffered a torn thigh muscle. He was expected to sit out the rest of the series, but he didn’t. He reentered the fray in the seventh alone. As he walked onto the court from the tunnel, he stopped warm ups and churned the New York Knicks fans into a frenzy. The story is that his presence inspired the Knicks to a 113-99 victory and the franchise’s first NBA Championship.

Longest Game Ever: And, maybe the greatest game, too — especially for the Phoenix Suns. On June 4, 1976, in the fifth game of the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics and the Suns went into three overtimes, the first Finals game ever to last that long. Phoenix took the game 128-126; but, two days later, the Celtics beat the Suns 87-80 in Phoenix to wrap up their 13th NBA championship.

The Longest Shot: The shot that made Kareem Abdul-Jabbar the NBA’s career scoring leader on April 5, 1984, was familiar: a graceful, high-arching sky-hook from the baseline, the shot that had become his trademark in a long and successful career. It was his 31,420th point of his career, breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record, which had been held by Wilt Chamberlain.

Golf

Tiger Woods, Youngest Masters Champ: At the tender age of 21, and only his fifteenth appearance as a pro, the highly touted Woods became the youngest player to win the Masters in the 61-year history of the tournament on April 13, 1997.

The Old St. Nick Wins Six: At 46, Jack Nicklaus, a 46-year-old “antique,” had won his 20th major golf championship, his first green jacket in 11 years, his sixth Masters Tournament in over three decades. Nicklaus won his first Masters, in 1963. With the sixth win in 1986, Nicklaus became the oldest Masters winner in history, a record which still stands.

A Woman Rocks the Boat: Annika Sorenstam challenges the men at the Bank of America Colonial tournament in 2003, becoming the first woman to play a PGA Tour event in 58 years. Before stepping away from competitive golf at the end of the 2008 season, she won 90 international tournaments as a professional, making her the female golfer with the most wins to her name.

Caddyshack Cracks Golf: Caddyshack would become arguably the most quoted film ever, adored by golfers and non-golfers alike. Opening in the summer of 1980, this comedy forever changed the golf lexicon, pitting the “snobs against the slobs.”

Other Sports

Cassius Clay Defeats Sonny Liston: On February 25, 1964, a brash, young speed-talking Olympic champion stood firm against a seemingly indestructible heavyweight champ. The controversial bout created Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxing icon of the latter 20th century.

Rocky Marciano Undefeated: Rocco Francis Marchegiano was an American boxer and the heavyweight champion of the world from September 23, 1952 to April 27, 1956. Marciano is the only champion to hold the heavyweight title and go untied, undefeated throughout his career. His last title bout was against 38-year-old Archie Moore on September 21, 1955.

Joe Louis Annihilates Max Schmeling: Within 124 seconds on June 22, 1938, Joe Louis beat a Nazi star athlete. Fought at Yankee Stadium, the contest was as much between the United States and Nazi Germany as between two superbly skilled athletes. There were almost 70,000 spectators and an estimated 100 million radio listeners throughout the world: “the largest audience in history for anything.”

Another Woman Rocks the Boat: On October 24th, 2009, undefeated boxer Lucia Rijker (17-0, 14 KOs) became the first female inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

NHL’s All-Time Leading Scorer: On October 15, 1989, Wayne Gretzky bacems the greatest hockey superstar when he surpassed Gordie Howe’s total of 1,850 points in a remarkable third of the time played. Even after retirement, he remains the leading point-scorer in National Hockey League (NHL) history, and his jersey number, 99, has been retired by all NHL teams.

Rogues’ Gallery: On May 29, 1996, Claude Lemieux hit Red Wings center Kris Draper from behind in Game 6 of the 1996 Western Conference finals.

After gazing intently at numerous sports infographics on the Web, we learned that most of the amazing and eye-popping infographics are produced outside the U.S. as hand-drawn graphics, inside the U.S. for newspapers, and through statistics designed visually by individuals who delve deeper than we’d ever go into any sport. The following 17 infographics are the best of the best, and they’re ones that every sports fan should see.

Analysis of the top 50 earners in World football: This stunning infographic displays the top 50 players who are the “best rewarded on the planet” as football (soccer) players. The artist split the top 50 players based upon nationality, then took a closer look at the relative success of their clubs. The hope was to render the disparity between the wages paid by some clubs compared to the number of trophies won in recent years.

Disability and Sports: This study’s results focuses on boys and girls under age 20 who reported having a mild disability in 2000. Rates of severe disability were consistently higher for boys than girls with 11 per 10,000 of the male population and five per 10,000 of the female population aged under 17 years in 2000. Scroll down to learn that disabled children and adolescents were more likely to participate in swimming in school than the general population.

Flip Flop Fly In: This entire site is filled with incredible infographics about baseball. You can see how much of his/her summer a Tigers fan might spend watching his/her team, or look at a fairly depressing stat of the top 25 all-time home run hitters. You also can learn the most common surnames in all the majors between 1872 and 2009 and look at a map showing the amount of traveling a team did fifty years ago.

Hand drawing and infographics: While this infographic is part of a larger article on hand drawn infographics, we included it because of its eye-popping beauty and because it focuses on horse racing, a sport that is seldom represented in lists such as this one. This particular piece of artwork was created by Fernando Robato, and includes a textured background, central illustration and many explanations with small details.

Injuries for Every 1,000 of Training: This blog exposes the injuries first reported by Men’s Health Magazine in 2009. The math works out to the number of injuries in more or less one hour, three times per week for six years. The highest risk is in rugby, with 31 injuries, while the lowest risk in treadmill running, with six injuries.

Innovations in Newspapers: This article showcases several sports infographics, focusing on Luis Chumpitaz and his work as a visual journalist. Since 2007 he has been the Infographics director of Dubai’s Arab Media Group (AMG). Abdulatif Alsayegh, AMG’s visionary CEO, sees his company as an “information engine” and wanted to start with these integration efforts led by Mustafa Alrawi, the AMG “Fusionist.” Luis now is the head of this superdesk.

Olympic drug testing program: This infographic shows why the International Olympic Committee tightened up its doping control program in Beijing in 2008. The graphic is broken down into the program itself, the doping control procedure, another section on doping in China and the Athens 2004 medal winners who committed doping offenses.

Parallel Coordinates and Football: Check out this multidimensional data visualization for jocks. First, this project explores various Parallel Coordinate tools as candidates for encoding more information about football statistics. Secondly, this project tests the validity of certain long-held notions about the game.

Race in Sports: This graphic focuses on race in sports. The statement is made that “a half-century after Jackie Robinson’s historic entrance into the game [baseball] — the number of black players is at the lowest level in almost 20 years.” This graphic is a breakdown of four major sports, including major league baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and major league soccer.

Santana’s Changeup: This amazing infographic focuses on teaching how to do a change up based upon how Johan Santana does it. Santana’s change up delivery looks like that of his fastball or slider, so the batter must read — within a split second — how Santana’s thumb and index fingers are placed on the ball and upon that ball’s release, as his body holds no clue that the change-up is about to occur.

Sport and Recreational Injury: In the U.S., more sports-related non-fatal injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments than any other type of unintentional injury. Approximately 4.3 million sports and recreation-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency departments during July 2000-June 2001. This page also shows two tables with the types of sports and percentage of non-fatal unintentional injuries treated in EDs, among boys and girls, respectively, ages 10-19 years.

Sports Designer: If you crave sports infographics for the sheer design and aesthetics of the genre, then you’ll love this site. Sports Designer offers visuals from across that country that focus on all sports, and they also offer the Sports Designer of the Year. Tim Parks of the Omaha World Herald was the winner for 2009, and this link leads to the page where you can view some of his work.

Statistics About Drugs in Sport: Before the Olympics, a survey and drug testing was done in East Germany among professional as well as amateur German athletes. According to the statistics, the number of athletes using prohibited sport drugs remained constant since 2004. This article states that, with the gene doping currently existing in the sports industry, it is likely that the statistics of drug in sports would increase by as much as 30 percent.

The rating is called “Performance Against Strength of Schedule,” and is based upon assigning values to each chain of head-to-head wins.

The Effects of Bike Commuting on Obesity: Heading into personal sports, this infographic shows how the effects of biking to work can affect people who are obese by country. To further help the promotion for biking to work, Good offers another infographic that shows the best U.S. cities for this activity. Portland, Oregon ranks at the top of the list, with New York at the bottom (although this infographic charts the results backwards, which may be a little confusing).

Visualrian Infographics: This link leads to just one of many graphics offered by this site, many which are focused on sports.

One of the ways that athletes can show their prowess is to compete against others on a similar level. As a result, sports leagues are formed to give athletes a chance to compete. Managers, athletes and others get involved to try and help the league gain popularity so that it is profitable and viable. However, some sports leagues just don’t make it. They have poor planning and management, or, in some cases, it just really wasn’t a good idea in the first place. Here are 20 professional sports leagues that failed:

Football

The United States Football League was created in order to be an alternative to the National Football League. The USFL was supposed to be profitable by not competing with the NFL, holding its season during the spring rather than going head to head with the NFL. Donald Trump even owned a USFL team, the New Jersey Generals. However, franchise instability was a problem, and nobody really cared to watch. The USFL lost $163 million during 1983 to 1985 before ceasing to exist. An anti-trust lawsuit was filed against the NFL, but not decided until 1988. The USFL was awarded $3.

The XFL was meant to be an “extra fun” football league, full of action and excitement. Vince McMahon, the head of the WWE, started it in 2001. The idea was that the NFL was too staid, with too many rules, and was too boring. The XFL didn’t compete directly with the NFL, playing during the NFL’s off season. The XFL was meant to be a single business entity, without individual franchises operating their own business concerns. Even though there was a great deal of TV coverage for the startup league, the XFL never really caught on. Few people cared to watch, and the XFL only lasted one season.

The Arena Football League, the AFL, was reasonably successful for some time. It was an indoor football league that started in 1987. Jim Foster started it, and it was meant to provide more excitement, since the field was shorter, creating an atmosphere that made it easier to score, with a faster paced game, and it was popular in some markets. However, the business model wasn’t working very well, and by 2008 the AFL was in serious debt. The league suspended operations, filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy. A new arena football league, Arena Football 1, started up in late 2009, and then changed its name to the Arena Football League in 2010.

The World Football League was yet another short-lived attempt to cash in on American football. The league only lasted for one season in 1974, and part of a season in 1975. The idea was to bring American style football to the world. The World Football League did manage to convince some NFL players to switch leagues, but the league ultimately failed. It couldn’t get the interest, and the closest it got to being a “world” league was a team in Hawaii. Without the benefits of cable, which would come later, the WFL just couldn’t cut it.

The United Football League started in 2008. Well, sort of. It false-started in 2008. Unable to get the traction it needed, it put things off until 2009. And it is struggling through 2010. While not officially failed yet, many are already ringing the death knell, since the UFL is making use of washed up NFL prospects. But, the UFL seems to hope that if it can hold on until next year, it can gain traction as a place for NFL players on strike over new contract negotiations in 2011.

The World League of American Football was another attempt at expanding the fan base beyond the U.S. The WLAF started in Europe, trying to get fans excited about American-style football. Unfortunately, things just got confusing. Europeans have their own kind of football — what we call soccer. And they weren’t all that excited for it. The WLAF folded in 1993, only two years after its inception, replaced by NFL Europe. Which also died out.

The All-America Football Conference was yet another competitor to the NFL. However, unlike many other competitors, the AAFC actually provided some innovations to the game that have stood the test of time. AAFC attracted some good players from 1946 to 1949, but even the well-funded league couldn’t win out over the NFL. In the end, three of the AAFC’s teams were absorbed by the NFL.

Basketball

The American Basketball Association started in 1967, and meant to compete with the NBA. The hallmarks of the ABA were its tri-colored basketball and the three-point shot. Another main point of the ABA was flashier play. The ABA was actually designed to fail: ABA promoters planned to force a merger with the NBA. Ultimately, even though the ABA failed to get all of its teams accepted into the NBA, it still succeed in its goal of failure with the merger in 1976.

The American Basketball League was a women’s league, meant to provide a place for professional female athletes excelling at basketball. The league only lasted two full seasons, from 1996 to 1998. One of the biggest reasons that the American Basketball League failed was due to operating losses. Widespread interest was hard to come by, and the ABL couldn’t compete with the resources garnered by the WNBA, which the NBA has operated (at a loss) since its inception.

Slamball is basketball played with trampolines. It’s a full contact sport, offering fast-paced excitement. There was a Slamball professional league in existence for 2002 to 2003, when games were aired. There was some Slamball in 2008, but that sort of died off as well. However, Slamball is trying to make a comeback in 2010. We’ll see how that goes. It is mostly Internet sensation fodder — and loved by reams of try-it-at-home types, many of whom find themselves in the hospital.

The All-American Basketball Alliance formed in 1977. The idea was to create a professional minor basketball league to compete with the Continental Basketball Association. Games were only played for a couple of months in 1978 before the league folded. It was a nice thought — becoming a premier minor league — but it just didn’t work out. The AABA couldn’t compete with the established minor league, and it didn’t get enough attention and funding to survive.

Another league called the All-American Basketball Alliance is a new league to be based in Atlanta, Georgia. This new league is a whites-only league, and will also exclude foreigners. The original start-up plan was to have the league in 12 cities, primarily in the South. But there appears to be little interest, despite the founder’s insistence that he isn’t a racist. (He said that “people of color” play “street-ball” instead of fundamentally sound basketball.) There just doesn’t seem to be that much interest in ponying up to watch the league, and it is expected to completely fizzle out any minute.

Other Sports

The Women’s United Soccer Association represented the first professional soccer league in the world for women, beginning play in April 2001. All the women were paid professionals, and the soccer league was formed on the heels of the 1999 World Cup Championship and the gold medal in the 2000 Olympics. The women, like Mia Hamm, were clean and sponsor friendly. However, the interest wasn’t there, and the league ceased operations in 2003. The league lost right around $100 million.

The North American Soccer League was an attempt to provide professional soccer in the United States and Canada. It was in operation from 1968 to 1984, but it never really gained widespread support. The league included indoor games as well as outdoor games to try and boost its fan base, but even that didn’t work. The game schedule was sparse, and sponsorship low. The league limped along until its final demise. Americans weren’t very interested in soccer, and it showed.

The World Boxing League was introduced in 2007, and debuted in 2008, and was meant to make money off team boxing. Every team was required to have six weight divisions, and participate in fights throughout the seasons. Playoffs would be held, to determine the best boxing team. The World Boxing League is still in existence, limping along, looking for an audience. Indeed, the “official” site hasn’t even been updated since 2009, leading some to believe that it might already be defunct.

Elite Xtreme Combat was a league designed around Mixed Martial Arts. EliteXC was supposed to raw and exciting, promising fierce fights. Specials were to be broadcast every other month on CBS, but things soon fell apart. One of the issues was that in the opening fight, Kimbo Slice took off the ear of his opponent, and the fight was pretty much over. The EliteXC league was only in operation for 2008, folding as it was unable to garner a mass market audience.

International Fight League was another MMA league that failed. It billed itself as the first Mixed Martial Arts league in the world, and didn’t manage to gain a wide following. It had a team format, opening in 2006 and closing in 2008. While Mixed Martial Arts is a fast-growing sport, and tournaments are televised, official leagues seem to have very limited success indeed, unable to gain a following. It seems as though people are more interested in watching individuals do MMA, rather than teams.

All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was in effect from 1943 to 1954. It started as a softball league, and did not play regulation baseball until its final season (which was done in an effort to increase fan interest). The league started up during World War II as a way for baseball to remain in the public eye while many of the male baseball stars were serving in the military. Mostly popular in the Midwest, the AAGPBL faded and eventually fizzled out, leaving baseball dominated by the male game.

The World Hockey Association was a North American league created in 1972 to compete with the National Hockey League. The WHA challenged the NHL, offering players higher pay, and creating an environment in which players could easily switch between leagues. The WHA was ultimately unstable, however, with teams folding. Throughout its history, the WHA was almost always engaged in legal battles with the NHL. In 1979 the NHL absorbed some of the WHA teams, and the WHA was no more.

Another attempt to resurrect the World Hockey Association was made in 2003. The new WHA planned to provide a place for NHL players during the 2004-05 lockout. There was draft in 2004, and an invitational tournament, but the actual league failed to materialize. The second attempt at the WHA fizzled before it even started, a true failure.
